Recipes for Sun Bathing

Is it possible to use natural oils for sun bathing? Yes, it is! Here’s what you need to know about it:

Essential oils have healing properties for the skin, so you want to use oils that are soothing and gentle in the skin while sun bathing. Such oils include Lavender, Sandalwood, Rose, Geranium or Helichrysum.

Vegetable oils are the base of your recipe and the main ingredient of a natural sun bathing solution. Vegetable oils can give you some protection towards the sun, but they need to be reapplied often, especially when your skin hasn’t seen the sun in a while or when you have very light or sensitive skin.

The oils will nourish your skin and the idea is that you will sun bathe gradually, meaning you won’t spend an entire day “baking” under the sun, but rather you’ll expose your skin for small periods of time each day. You’ll also reapply the oil every time you feel that the skin is getting dry or hot ensuring you have a consistent layer of nourishment as you expose your skin to the sun. That way you’ll receive the benefits of Vitamin D as you get a beautiful tan.

There are several recipes with natural oils for this purpose. Here are some possibilities:

Basic Sun Bathing Recipe

For this recipe you only need one essential oil and one vegetable oil.

  • Add 10 drops of Lavender or Sandalwood or Geranium to 100mL of Coconut Oil or Carrot Oil.

Sun Bathing Recipe for Sensitive Skin

  • Add 6 drops of Lavender and 6 drops of Geranium to 100mL of Calendula Oil. If your skin needs more nourishment you may also use Shea Butter.

Anti Ageing Sun Bathing Recipe

  • Add 4 drops of Helichrysum, 4 drops of Rose and 4 drops of Sandalwood to a 100mL bottle with 1/2 Avocado Oil or Olive oil and 1/2 Coconut Oil.

Gold Bronze Sun Bathing Recipe

  • Add 5 drops of Lavender and 5 drops of Sandalwood to a 100mL bottle with 1/2 Carrot Seed Oil and 1/2 Coconut Oil.

Note: overexposure to the sun is something that your skin won’t enjoy and it may even burn it. Be gentle with your skin. Sun is good and healthy, but – like everything else in life – balance is the key, so moderate amounts are advised. That’s the secret to get the best results from these recipes.
