Pregnancy & Essential Oils: Delivery and Post-Partum

Delivery

To support contractions and make them effective: Clary Sage, Myrrth, Geranium or Lavender may help.

Blend Clary Sage, Geranium and Lavender with a carrier oil for topical application or blend Myrrth and Clary Sage with a carrier oil. Apply the blend on hands, lower back and belly.

Apply 1 to 3 diluted drops of Helichrysum to prevent hemorrhaging. It can also be applied in the perineum area for support.

For the pains during labor, use Basil or Black Pepper, previously diluted in a carrier oil. Apply in the lower black. They’re both known for their warming anti-inflammatory properties so they will help release the pain. Diluted Basil can also be applied in the temples.

Post-Partum

After the baby is born, both the new Mom and the baby need proper support. The main challenges for the Mother are: fatigue, soreness from delivery, lactation issues and emotional/psychological adjustments.

To tone the uterus apply Clary Sage around the ankles.

For the breasts, the best supporters are: Myrrth, Geranium and Sandalwood. Apply one of these oils diluted directly on the nipples after breastfeeding.

To help the scars heal (in case of caesarean) the best oil is Frankincense. It should be applied diluted twice a day.

The oils that can support the increase of milk production are Fennel, Clary Sage, Geranium and Basil. Dilute one of the oils and gently massage all over the breasts (except the nipples).

To support the perineum it can be used Helichrysum or Frankincense diluted or 10 drops for a 15mL bottle of water. Spraying this blend in the perineum will help it soothe.
