Gold, Frankincense & Myrrth

Along with Gold the other two gifts received by Baby Jesus from the Three Wise Kings were Frankincense and Myrrth. Indeed, these two essential oils are quite powerful. It was not by chance that such precious gifts were offered, since it is believed that both of them have benefits as precious as Gold.

Frankincense

Frankincense can offer a wide range of health benefits. The oil acts in the limbic system of the brain, therefore relieving stress and anxiety symptoms. It is also connected to reducing pain and inflammation, boosting the immune system and some say and testify that it even fights cancer. It is common to use this essential oil in religious practices or meditations due to the emotional properties associated with this oil. Frankincense can be used either by inhaling the oil or absorbing into the skin. Studies have demonstrated that Frankincense has immune-enhancing properties which help destroy bacteria, viruses and even cancers. Some intake a few drops of the oil, but in any case, be sure of the sources and purity of the essential oil you use.

My favourite way to use Frankincense is through the diffuser. I like to mix it with a citrus oil or with a menthe family oil during my Meditation, my Yoga or my Qigong. It is also possible to use it in the skin mixtures since Frankincense is a powerful protector of the skin cells, reducing acne blemishes, improving the skin texture, preventing wrinkles and even helping lifting and tighten the skin. I have also heard of people who applied 2 to 3 drops of frankincense with a carrier oil directly in burns or cuts with very good results (the skin recovered in about half the time it would take to heal) and prevented scars.

Amongst other benefits it is also used to relive indigestion symptoms when taken internally, it is used for coughing relief, it is used for muscle aches or arthritis (when applied directly in the location in need through the usage of a carrier oil) and since it reduces chronic stress it may also help fall asleep.

Frankincense is a versatile oil that can be combined with several other essential oils and carrier oils, and since Frankincense has no reported adverse side effects, it’s safe to use (just like everything else in life, with moderation). For all these reasons Frankincense is mentioned as one of the three precious gifts.

Myrrh

Myrrth was also offered to Baby Jesus and it is mentioned in the Bible more than 100 times! It was used as a spice, a natural remedy or to embalm the dead. Myrrh is botanically related to Frankincense and is one of the most widely used essential oils. Myrrh oil has a smoky and bitter smell. It is commonly used as a base for perfume.

Myrrth has been used worldwide from China to Egypt. Just like Frankincense (and often combined with it) Myrrth is also commonly used for attending religious ceremonies due to its meditative properties. This powerful fragrance can and should be combined with citrus oils for an uplifting scent. This mix promotes inspiration and emotional insight. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It also acts in the emotional center, promoting feelings of calm and balance. It is currently under investigation for its anticancer, antibacterial benefits as well as other potential therapeutic uses.

Myrrh was also used to treat wounds and prevent infections. It is very powerful for a healthy skin. It helps particularly dry or cracked skin and it’s therefore perfect to treat burns and wounds. It has wonderful healing properties, so you can add a few drops to a cold compress and apply it directly to any infected or inflamed area for relief due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. And for these reasons it is very good for oral health (just like Frankincense). Due to its astringent effects, it may also help prevent hair loss by strengthening the roots in the scalp. Myrrh can increase the function of white blood cells, critical for wound healing.

Myrrh does have some side effects that need to be considered. Since one of the most common Myrrh oil usages is topical, people with sensitive skin should be cautious. Myrrh has been found to cause dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin, in some people. Always test it first and make sure you use a carrier oil. Pregnant women should avoid taking Myrrth since it may enhance uterine contractions. Myrrth is not recommended for people who take medication for diabetes since it interacts with blood glucose. It is also not recommend for people who are taking anticoagulants and it should be addressed carefully for those who have heart conditions. In the case you are under treatment or you experience some health issues take special care before you intake or use Myrrth in a daily basis.

So both these oils have powerful properties especially when it comes to the immune system and the treatment and prevention of diseases. The best way to start using them would be diffusing them mixed with citrus oils while practicing exercise or wishing to be focus and relaxed. One to two drops of one of these oils can also be used added to my face skin recipe. Given their high beneficial compounds I believe it was not by chance that these essential oils were amongst the three precious gifts.
